World Class City Band will be back on the Square July 20

Jul 17, 2017

CHARLOTTE — Back by popular demand, World Class City Band will perform during the Summer Concerts on the Square free music series on July 20.  For the third year, the band will appear at Courthouse Square with their large sound featuring big band and horn-driven rock classics.

Of the entire series, this is the largest group presented with a big sound featuring a 7-piece horn section and 5-piece rhythm section.  All the players are professional musicians and nearly all are college trained music majors.

The concerts are Thursday evenings and staged at the downtown 1885 Courthouse Square with no charge for attendance.  This concert is sponsored by Ameriprise Financial of Charlotte.

Under the direction of John Dale Smith, the World Class City Band performs big band music with strong horns, a driving rhythm section, and the desire to take you back to the “Era of Swing”.  The World Class City Band first performed at the Michigan Small Business Convention and was an instant hit for the event.

Following intermission, WCCB will be on a mission to move your souls with Blues Brothers music, Chicago tunes, Motown sounds, and pop classics from the fifties to today. In addition, the band features easy listening favorites designed to appeal to all age groups and musical tastes.

Each member of the group has a colorful musical background including professional performances with world famous entertainers such as The Moody Blues, Mitzi Gaynor, Marvin Hamlish, Maureen McGovern, Sally Struthers, and magician Harry Blackstone.  Some of the musicians have performed at Wharton Center and other venues in Broadway shows such as Evita, Annie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Raincoat, Motown The Musical, The Adams Family, and many others.

Charlotte’s Summer Concert on the Square free music series continues each Thursday evening through the end of August.  All concerts are free and open to the public.  Bring your lawn chair, picnic blanket and non-alcoholic refreshments and enjoy an evening of great music in downtown Charlotte.   Also, be sure to visit the Thursday evening Farmer’s Market at Courthouse Square from 3 p.m. until 7 pm.
