Residents required to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice

The City of Charlotte would like to remind residents of their responsibility to help keep sidewalks clear of ice and snow during the winter season. Chapter 56, Section 118 of the Charlotte City Code says that “no person having the care, either as owner or occupant, of any house, building or lot shall permit any snow or ice to remain on any sidewalk in front of any house, building or lot within the City of Charlotte.”

Violators of this ordinance may be held responsible for a civil infraction and a fine levied. There is an increasing scale of fines for subsequent offenses. For purposes of enforcement, the snow season is considered to be October 1 through April 30.

Clean and clear sidewalks help school children and those who depend on non-motorized transportation travel safely within the city. Similarly, residents with disabilities depend on clear sidewalks for safe travel. Pedestrians forced to walk in the street due to unsafe sidewalks are put in a dangerous position that can be avoided if all residents take responsibility for the sidewalks in front of their home or business.
