The Zoning Board of Appeals is appointed by the City Council pursuant to provisions of Michigan’s Zoning Enabling Act and the City’s zoning ordinance. The ZBA meets as necessary to hear appeals of decisions made by City officials in carrying out the provisions of the zoning ordinance. Many appeals take the form of a request for a variance from the literal provisions of the ordinance. Variances may be granted by the ZBA when it determines that the application of zoning ordinance provisions constitutes a hardship that is unique to that property and not caused by the applicant him/herself.
