Acting as a
clearinghouse of community information, demographics and networking
opportunities, the Community Development Department can provide the
necessary facts, figures and information needed to make an informed
decision about locating a big or small business in Charlotte.
The city's
experienced staff can help you take advantage of important local
development tools and incentives like PA 198 Industrial Facilities
Tax Exemption certifications and USEPA Brownfield Assessment grants.
Other successful local development initiatives include a very
popular downtown facade improvement grant program and a modern
Michigan Certified Business Park.
The city's
Community Development staff also works closely with representatives
of the state and federal government as may be necessary to ensure
that every available resource is brought to bear in support of your
development project. Great location, modern incentives and a high
quality of life help make Charlotte a competitive location from
which to do business in the global marketplace.
Community residents
may be able to enlist the help of the city's Community Development
resources through grant programs aimed at the rehabilitation of both
houses and apartments. These programs make funding for home
improvements directly available to landlords and homeowners.
The Community
Development department also helps plan and fund local community
marketing initiatives in partnership with organizations like Can Do!
and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. These include television
marketing campaigns that feature Charlotte, as well as afternoon and
evening seminar series and presentations intended to provide local
residents and business owners with special skills and information
otherwise unavailable in Charlotte. These include topics of special
interest to small business owners, job seekers, prospective
entrepreneurs, and leadership development candidates.
This department is
often involved with the planning and promotion of special community
events and festivals, ranging from the annual Celebrate Charlotte
Festival to the DDA Downtown Farmer's Market. The Community
Development staff is also working to develop and maintain the city's
Beach Airport as a modern airfield suitable for commercial and
recreational flying. Featuring a 3,500-foot concrete runway, modern
aviation infrastructure including AWOS and lighted airfield signage,
more recent improvements include a remodeled terminal building,
self-service aviation fuel via credit card payment, and experienced,
highly qualified aircraft maintenance and flight instruction
services.
Because a high
quality of life is central to the development and livability of any
city, Charlotte's Community Development staff also works in support
of a wide range of local projects and initiatives including parks &
recreation development, community walkability, cable
television/public access television and many general administration
activities.
