City Clerk, Michelle (Shelly) King was born at Fort Bragg Army Hospital while her father was serving in the United States Army, after 18 months in Germany the family moved to Flint Township where Michelle grew up.
Michelle attended Carman-Ainsworth Schools, earning her diploma and graduating following her junior year of high school. She played softball and was active in her church. Shortly after graduating high school, Michelle married Gregory. They have two daughters and two granddaughters. Although she a dedicated public servant, Michelle believes being a wife, mother and “Nana” are her first priorities and her greatest accomplishments.
In 1993, Michelle, who was an election inspector at the time, was asked to fill in as a secretary for Board of Review in her hometown of Flint Township. What was supposed to be a temporary job, turned into a career. Michelle spent more than eleven years at Flint Township working as the Administrative Assistant to the Township Supervisor, under two different Supervisors. While working at Flint Township, she began taking college courses and earned her Bachelors Degree in Applied Science majoring in Political Science from the University of Michigan – Flint Campus while working full time.
Just weeks after completing her course work at UM-Flint, Michelle was hired as the City Clerk and Chief Financial Officer in Clio, Michigan, where she served from July 2004 until being hired by the City of Charlotte in May 2008.
Michelle is an active member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, Michigan Municipal Clerks Association, and is the Vice President of the Capital Area Municipal Clerks Association. In 2012, Michelle will become one of only 62 municipal clerks in the State of Michigan, from 1,773 cities, townships and villages, to receive her Master Municipal Clerk designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.
