Lloyd Conway

Born in 1962 in Detroit, Lloyd, the second of three brothers, grew up in the nearby suburb of Ferndale. Following graduation from Ferndale High School in 1980, Lloyd entered the US Army, into which he’d enlisted while still a senior. He took basic training at Ft. Benning, GA and served as an infantryman (mortar crewman) with the 3rd Infantry Division (Aschaffenburg, Germany) and the 2nd Armored Division (Ft. Hood, TX).

Following the completion of his enlistment, Lloyd returned to Michigan and enrolled in Wayne State University (Detroit) in 1985. He transferred to Excelsior College, Albany, NY in 1987 and received a B.A from that school with majors in history and political science.
Lloyd continued his military service with the National Guard, first with the 225th Infantry (Detroit), then with the 125th Infantry (Detroit), followed by a return to active duty in 1993 as a recruiter and then as a training NCO, the latter assignment with the 182d Field Artillery (Detroit), where he returned to reserve status in 1998 and where he remained until his retirement in 2007 as a platoon sergeant.

lloyd returned to school shortly after earning his undergraduate degree, enrolling in Wayne State in 1988 and earning a Master of Arts in Teaching (Secondary Education) in 1999. He then enrolled into the Master of Public Administration program at Western Michigan University, graduating with honors in 2003. He is also a member of Phi Alpha Alpha, the public administration honor society.

Lloyd married and started a family during this time. He is married to the former Julie Gentz and they have two daughters, Olivia (b. 1997) and Abigail (b. 2000). Lloyd also has three children from a previous marriage: Erika (b. 1987), Halston (b. 1988) and Anya (b. 1989).

Lloyd and his family moved from Ferndale to Lansing in 1998, shortly before he accepted a civil service position with the State of Michigan, where he is still employed. In his current capacity, Lloyd has provided ‘Rapid Response’ assistance to companies, unions and affected workers at 200 plant closings and mass layoffs.

Since 1999, Lloyd has taught for Spring Arbor University as an adjunct instructor, teaching business courses, a values/ethics course, state & local government, Michigan and US history, economics and courses in geography. He also served as a Board of Education member for Our Savior Lutheran School (Grand Ledge) and is currently serving as the Treasurer of the Old Detroit Light Guard (225th Infantry alumni association), as well as a board member for the Lansing Area Mac-Lisa User Group (LAMALUG) and the Lansing Area Lutheran High School Steering Committee. He is also an active member of the Michigan Chapter of the United States Field Artillery Association. Lloyd has served on City Council since July, 2011.
