Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing Inspections

Jul 1, 2011

In 2007, the City of Charlotte assumed responsibility for enforcing provisions of the State Construction Code related to electrical, mechanical and plumbing inspections. Prior to this time, these inspections were performed by Eaton County. Upon assumption of responsibility, the City contracted with Regional Inspections, LLC of Corunna, Michigan, a company that employed inspectors to perform this work.

As a result of clerical staff reductions planned for the 2011-12 fiscal year, the City implemented a variety of measures intended to reduced the need for clerical services. It was determined that returning to Eaton County the responsibility for performing electrical, mechanical and plumbing inspections would eliminate the need for processing permit applications at City Hall while at the same time not significantly burdening contractors applying for permits.

Ordinances 2011-02, 2011-03 and 2011-04 were adopted to repeal previously enacted ordinances passed in 2007. In addition, the City sought and received a waiver of the 12-month notice provision under State statute to permit the immediate transfer of the responsibility to Eaton County. The effective date of this change was July 1, 2011.
